How To Make Salted Caramel Apple Pie Crust At Home!

Grab a large mixing bowl and mix salt and flour and then add the butter with the shortening in the mixture. Then use a pastry cutter (Or if you do not have a pastry cutter, use two forks) and cut the batter and shortenings into the mixture until it becomes pea-sized crumbs. (It is okay if your crumb has large pieces of fat in it).

Next, measure ½ cup of water, add ice to it and stir it. From the ice and water, measure out ½ a cup of water and drizzle the cold water in, 1 tablespoon at a time. Keep stirring with a wooden spatula or a rubber spatula after every tablespoon of water added.

Do not add any excess water, and stop adding the water once the dough starts to form large clumps. We usually add ½ cups of water or a little more in the dry winters.

Transfer your pie dough to a floured surface and the dough should come together pretty easily and will not be sticky. Cover your hands with flour and fold the dough properly. Then form the dough into a ball and divide it in half. And then divide the dough in half.

Finally, wrap each properly in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for about 2-2.5 hours.

How To Make Salted Caramel Sauce?

So, to make a homemade caramel sauce the first thing you will need is a large bowl that has tall sides because this could get messy! Make sure you use a good quality pot that spreads heat evenly as sometimes inexpensive bad quality pots tend to dissipate heat unevenly causing the caramel to cook unevenly in the process.

Add sugar and water to a small-sized saucepan and keep whisking at medium-high heat until its fully combined. Once you realize it has fully combined, you can stop the stirring action. Instead of whisking, tilt the pot side to side to prevent any burning on any side. And this method also prevents sugar from crystallizing.

You can never rush caramel into being the perfect consistency and colour, so wait for it to cook until it gets to that rich golden-brown colour. Once you reach the desired colour, take it off the heat to cause that gritty caramel to form.

But as soon as you remove the caramel from the heat, add the cream ASAP, make sure you have the cream in a measuring cup and slowly add the cream to the caramel as the hot mixture will bubble up with the reaction to the cream.

Try to do this step fast as we do not want the caramel to cool down. But if it does, to bring it back to liquid form, simply microwave it. Sprinkle in some quality sea salt and you are GOOD TO GO!

ADVICE: If you manage to burn your caramel or heat it more to a brownish colour instead of a rich Golden brown one, there is no point in saving it! You will need to start over.

How To Make Salted Caramel Apple Pie?

Step 1: Prep The Pie

Preheat your oven to around 375℉ and place the pie crust on a 9-inch glass pie plate. Next, grab a large mixing bowl and mix granulated sugar, ¼ cup flour and then cinnamon according to your taste preference. After that, add apples and toss to coat them properly with all the ingredients in the bowl. Then spoon the apple mixture into the crust-lined pie plate. Next, get a small bowl and mix 2 tablespoons caramel sauce with milk and drizzle it over the apples, coating properly.

Step 2: Prep Lattice Dough

Get a medium-sized bowl and mix 1 cup of flour and brown sugar into it. Then, with a pastry blender, cut cubes of butter in the mixture and keep blending until the mixture gets a crumb-like texture.

Step 3: Set The Lattice On The Pie

To make the lattice crust top, cut the second crust into ½ inch wide strips with a pastry cutter and place half the strips across the filling in the pie plate. Then weave the remaining strips with the first added strips to form a lattice. Trim the extra ends and fold the trimmed ends on the sides of the pie plate. Then seal and flute.

Step 4: Bake And Cool

Bake at 375 ℉ for around 50-60 minutes until the crust is golden brown. Then let it cool down for almost 25 minutes and then drizzle the remaining caramel apple sauce over the pie. Place it in the fridge for 2 hours before serving.

Tips For Best Outcomes

The Crust: As this recipe requires a two-layer crust, make sure you make enough crust for the lower and upper part of the pie. They have to be similar without any problems because the crust gives the pie a texture that makes it enjoyable to eat.

Salted Caramel Sauce: The salted caramel sauce might seem like a very easy to make recipe but underestimating it will have you remaking it a lot of times. This is why try to focus on your caramel, do not take your eyes off it and do it right!

Apples: We personally love our granny smiths for our salted caramel apple pie recipe because Granny smiths have a lot of moisture in them and intense flavours, unlike other apples. However, other apples too can be used and you can choose whichever you prefer.

Make it right: This is a fairly time-consuming recipe and requires focus, to make it right on your first try, follow the recipe exactly as it is and try your best to make every measurement on point, focus on every component and do not underestimate anything!

Storing Your Salted Caramel Apple Pie

A freshly baked Caramel Apple Pie can last at room temperature for almost 2 days if not sliced. As soon as your pie has cooled down, place a plastic wrap on top and seal it off at room temperature. However, if you have cut into the pie then you will need to store the slices in a container or plate covered with some loose plastic wrap and place it in the fridge. The pie will be able to last for 2-3 days if you do this.

I was so scared of making the caramel sauce that I didn’t cook it long enough. It was on a little longer than the recipe called for but at the high altitude I’m at it seems most things take longer to bake! Lovely recipe and so dang easy!! I also put some caramel aside to add as wanted 🙂 My mom and dad both love it!
